The imposing gallery, an important national architectural monument, was built between 1887 and 1890 based on a design by engineer Emanuele Rocco, later continued by Antonio Curri, and later expanded by Ernesto di Mauro. It was constructed as part of the territorial redefinition underway during the redevelopment period. It was completed in just three years to provide the city center with a sufficiently large public space sheltered from the elements: the gallery served not only an important commercial and social function, but also a monumental one.

Coedil Sud Srl carried out the restoration of the exterior and interior facades of the Galleria Umberto I in Naples.
